Caringbah Redbacks FC Club

Results | Fixtures | Profile

North Caringbah Redbacks was formed in 1961 when the founding members, Ken Chipman and John De Witt, saw the need for another soccer club in Caringbah area and broke away from Caringbah Rangers. An area behind North Caringbah Public School was thought to be a suitable site and after much lobbying with Sutherland Council, the local school and residents, the go ahead was given.

The field was leveled, the scrub removed, the holes filled in and the snakes scared away and after much hard work the club came into being with 3 teams being formed for the beginning of the 1961 season ? 8C, 9B and 11C. Ken Reid scored the club?s first goal. By 1964 the club had 12 teams.

The first canteen was 2 card tables underneath beach umbrellas. This was replaced by a prefabricated construction which was put up and taken down each weekend and stored in Jack Reid?s backyard which was just off the field. This was later replaced by the grand concrete brick structure which withstood many years of service and still stands to this day serving as gear room and change room. A huge redback spider has been painted on one end and serves as a reminder to all shire visitors of North Caringbah Redbacks. In 1995 after many, many years of saving and hard work, our new clubhouse was finally completed and opened by Harrie Dening at the beginning of that season. It was certainly a momentous occasion.

The red and black colours were chosen by the original members, Ken Chipman and John De Witt, who both had had previous associations with clubs with these colours. These colours also didn?t clash with any other club, although at one point in the early sixties a coin was tossed to see if North Caringbah or Georges River would wear yellow or red shirts. The rest is history. There was debate within the club as to the emblem, a choice between red robins or spiders, with the spider being the final choice. Margaret Oliver designed the emblem of the spider on the original shirt. In 1999 another momentous occasion with the launch of our new uniform and what a credit it was to the club and Michael Thompson who had a huge input into the final choice of shirt. Still in the red and black colours, the shirt is one of the smartest uniforms in the shire sporting a spider on the left h and shoulder and being very distinctive in its appearance.
